If you're anything like most readers, you've got a shelf (or three) full of books you've already read and aren't planning to pick up again. They sit there gathering dust, taking up space, and quietly making you feel guilty every time you buy something new.
So what do you actually do with them?
Most people have tried the usual options. Donate them to an op shop, list them one by one on Facebook Marketplace, or leave them in a box on the footpath and hope for the best. None of these are particularly satisfying. Op shops don't pay you. Facebook Marketplace means dealing with no-shows and lowball offers. And the footpath box usually just gets rained on.
There's now a better option in Sydney. Welcome Rechapter's Book Buyback Service
How ReChapter works:
ReChapter is a book trade-in service that lets you swap your old books for QBD store credit. No listing, no negotiating, no waiting around for a buyer. Here's the process:
Step 1: Scan your books at home
Go to qbd.rechapter.com.au on your phone or computer. Scan the barcode on the back of each book, or type in the ISBN number. The system will tell you instantly whether the book is accepted and how much it's worth.
This step happens at home, before you visit the store. You don't need to bring your books in first.
Step 2: Drop them off at QBD
Once you've scanned your books and confirmed the ones you want to trade in, take them to one of the participating QBD stores:
- QBD Chatswood
- QBD Hornsby
- QBD Blacktown
Hand them over to the team at the counter. It takes about two minutes.
Step 3: Get your gift card
After your books are checked in, you'll receive a QBD eGift Card by email. You can use it straight away, either in-store or online. No waiting period, no minimum spend.
What books can you trade in?
The system accepts a wide range of titles, but not every book will qualify. Generally, popular fiction, recent bestsellers, and well-known authors are most likely to be accepted. The books also need to be in good condition, with no missing pages, heavy water damage, or excessive marking.
The easiest way to find out is to just scan them. It takes a few seconds per book and you'll know immediately.
What do you get paid?
The amount varies by title. Popular, in-demand books are worth more. On average, customers receive a few dollars per book. It might not sound like a lot for a single book, but if you're clearing out 10 or 20 titles, it adds up quickly, and it's money you would have got nothing for otherwise.
Why not just donate?
Donating is great if you want to, and we'd never discourage it. But if you'd rather get something back for your books and still know they're going to a new reader, ReChapter gives you that option. Every book we collect gets quality-checked and resold to someone who wants it. Nothing goes to waste.
